Thread: Eddy Davis Mando

    Default Eddy Davis Mando

I haven't posted on this site in quite some time, as I've been into banjos as of late...TBs, RBs, you know. Eddy Davis is my favorite tenor banjoist, and he's been laying down some things on mando. Copasetic/similar instruments? mando/T banjo? very close?

Eddy is a Master Player and writer, and I thought some mandolinists may enjoy.

Thanks for posting that DC! I love Eddy's playing. I came across a great version of Yardbird Suite that he plays and adapted portions as an introduction to the tune. I can't play it as good as Eddy but I posted a version for this forum's Jazz Tune of the Month in July. Here is his great version:

Actually I checked the notes on the YT page and he is playing a Flatiron mandola. It is a little hard to tell but I think he has it single-strung as well at least it sounds that way to me. I have met Eddy and heard him play a few times. He is amazing and a wonderful chord-melody player.

Been looking around for more resources like Eddy Davis, where an artist accompanies themselves on a single instrument, tuned in 5ths. I'm not 100% sure if tunes outside the jazz genre defy the definition of "chord melody", but I'd be open to anything that makes a single instrument sound like more.

Django Reinhardt produced some of my favorite examples, though those are few and far between. I've also listened to guys like Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Earl Klugh, but those are all guitarists. I'd like to hear some stuff that is more directly representative of what my instrument can do in the right hands.

Are there any more gems out there like Eddy?

Check in the tenor guitar forum. Specifically, look at John Lawlor mentioned in this thread (with videos and links).

    Also: Aaron Weinstein

As far as the tunes outside of jazz, search for duo-style for "classical" mandolin. Raffaele Calace was a trun of the last century composer often using that style. Jsut about all his published works are available for free download here. Since you are a mandocellist, (you might be familiar with this already) check out the sheet music for liuto and while that has an extra E-course (10-strings) you may be able to work with some of the music.

    Jim,

Yes! "Duo-style" is a great keyword to base my searches on. Amazing what you can dig up with the right vocabulary. Thanks for that.

Oh man, John Lawlor's playing is revelatory. Definitely going to be spending time down that rabbit hole...

As for Calace, I'm definitely familiar. That link, however, is a goldmine.

Gotta say, you just hit a triple here. Thank you!
