    Dang. There are, if I'm not mistaken, only two of these beasts in existence. Some years back I had just about convinced the [former] owner of the original Specimen aluminum mandola to trade it to me. But he backed out. Specimen [Ian Schneller] made a few very interesting mandophonic instruments, but focuses mostly on guitars and vintage-style horn speakers. Andrew Bird is among the artists who use Specimen speakers on stage.

    The original is thirty years old; a reissue was made in 2008. I don't know which one this is. It is machined from billet aluminum (i.e., not bent from sheet metal). I know it looks weird, but the question is, how does it sound?
