    Default New to the Forum

    Hello,
My first post to the Forum. I have been reading the Mandolin Forum for several years and have enjoyed learning about the Mandolin from members. I am a Banjo player and started to learn the Mandolin several years ago. The forum feels like a special club of smart, talented and respectful folks.

Off the top of my head I learned the following from the Forum:
    1) Always respect other members as we all like different stuff.
    2) If planning to buy a new Mandolin try to play as many as possible.
    3) Even high end Mandolins sometime need new strings and a setup.
    4) The Mandolin Store is a great place to buy a Mandolin.
    5) You get a bang for your buck with a A model, however F Models are cool, better buy both.
    6) David Harvey makes a great Gibson Mandolin.
    7) Kentucky and Eastman are great values.
    8) Take care of your Mandolin, but don't baby it.
    9) The first dent is the worse.
    8) No one seemed to dig the Bill Monroe Kentucky Commemorative 5000 Mandolin.

    On my own I learned:
    1) I have to travel 500 mile to play a nice Mandolin.
    2) To get over MAS I stopped looking at the Classifieds and starting looking at my Credit Card Statement.
    3) Keep your Mandolin in arms reach.
    4) I am thankful for the Mandolins I own.

The Forum is a great place to learn from others and is a valued resource. I check it almost daily.

I appreciate learning, reviews and support you give players!

Welcome Joe! This is indeed a great place to hang out.

What kind(s) of music do you play?

Do you play 5 string or tenor? If you like Irish music, the tenor is terrific since it's tuned mando style.

    I especially like:

Haven't you learned? Never admit to being a banjo player.

It's a great experience here if you can overlook some of the wise ass remarks.

    Yeah, well ...

Welcome, Sloppy Joe. I presume 'Sloppy' is the nickname for 'Ban'.

ps: my real banjo is a 1964 Ode. but I have an 1920s Washburn tenor and the 'teens Vega in my avatar photo.

I play banjo too, pretty avidly. At lest it's an Irish Tenor (maker's description) tuned GDAE, so it's ALMOST a mandolin

Thanks for making me feel welcome! I play Bluegrass and old Fiddle tunes available in my Mandolin instructional songbook. I play a Gibson A5 L and a Ratlliff R5. I keep my Rogue next to me as I watch TV.
The Mandolin is a great instrument to play around with. The kids and dog like it better than the banjo!
