Like a thousand inspired soul sister choir singers rolled into one big giant talent. Here's one of my favorites with my hero Skydog on slide guitar. RIP Soul Sister you are missed.

key word is ' soul '.....doesn't seem to be a lot of that around in contemporary music anymore ...and nowhere close to what Aretha brought .

one of hte few artists whose importance can not be overstated. Of the living artists, she is as high, if not higher than McCartney, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, (I'd add David Grisman in this forum, but not others... no offence...)... Madonna, Beyonce, maybe Jimmy Page?

A rare breed, a rare talent, and a great loss. Vale

    Talent, yes, seemingly unlimited.

    Also, work.

Aretha may have been the best American vocal musician of the past fifty years. (And she could play a mean piano too.) However powerful her voice, however pleasing her timbre, however tasteful her backing arrangements, her phrasing is what awes.

That 4 octave voice was powered by one heck of a heart, which was certainly acquainted with the blues. Aretha, Ray, Louis Armstrong - American National Treasures.
