Default Gibson tailpiece for A1 mondolin

    Hi all,

I hope this is the right forum to post into but if not let me know and I'll go there :-)

Long story short my dad has a 1916 Gibson A1 mandolin but lost the tailpiece at a gig recently.

Ideally we'd like to get a Gibson tailpiece for an A1 to replace it (year doesn't really matter) but we don't know where to start looking..?

Any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Leon

Like everything else, Google is a good first step. But first, I assume you mean the tailpiece COVER, as the tailpiece itself is screwed in and has strings attached, etc. That said ...

If you want the real thing from the general era: Yikes! Reverb has one for $250 or so - yes, JUST the cover. There may be others. And there is eBay, at least to get an idea of what's out there. Newer Gibson covers s/b cheaper, but I don't know if compatibility/fit might be an issue.

OTOH, if a "non-Gibson" reproduction will do, Stew-Mac will sell a whole tailpiece for $30 or so. Here's a start:

    Hope this helps!

Post a Wanted add in the Classifieds. They do come up now and again but they are expensive. You could also consider a replica tailpiece with cover from Greg Boyd. If you go that route keep the original base.

Thanks guys for all the responses and very sorry it took me so long to reply...

Yes you guys are absolutely right, it's the tailpiece cover I'm looking for, and 250 is quite a lot, wow! At the moment we're still holding out for an original which I suppose doesn't have to be era correct so maybe that'll be a bit more reasonable?

I'll check out ebay and reverb and post on the wanted section here too and see where we get.

Thanks again guys and again, sorry for the tardiness!
