The natures miracle stuff is pretty amazing! I had a cat that decided it was very angry about something outside and “marked” the corner of a leather couch. I was not pleased one tiny bit but, went to the big box pet place(I don’t care for them much either) and got the spray and after two or three applications there was no aroma at all!

While Nature's Miracle is great, In my experience, it will remove most of the odor, but some remains.

I would never put a mandolin back in a case that a cat marked, regardless if it was cheap or not. I can't imagine playing a mandolin that had even a slight smell of cat urine. Toss the case and get a new one.

I like the charcoal idea, pops! I bet part of the coffee trick relies on a similar scientific idea because of the roasting. Speaking of cats and freezers one of our barn cats likes to leap from the rafters onto the top of a chest freezer I keep out there. One time he knocked to cord from the wall and I could have really used that charcoal idea when I noticed it thawed out 3 days later. Lost a lot of venison that time.

This thread is more fun than debating award nominees. : )

I never heard of or experienced cat BO. Throw away the old case. Buy a new case and keep the lid closed...

+1 on Nature's Miracle. You can even use it after drunken house guests puke on the floor.

I highly recommend giving the case to the cat and buying a new one for yourself. Everybody's happy. Well at least as happy as a cat can be.

    Any suggestions?
Maybe post a picture of it just in 'case' it shows up in the classifieds one day?

For most of them, if they fit, they sit. Mine likes mandolin cases. Was especially fond of this J.Bovier. I honestly never noticed an odor. Then again, they went thru my sinuses to remove a pituitary gland tumor and that could have affected my sense of smell. Never heard from the guy I sold the J.Bovier to.

Filthy Kats Man! Not in my house! The only smell I like in my case is that 80-100 year old Gibson smell that engulfs my music room! If a cat messed in my case, well ya know that tune Bye Bye Blues!!!

I never got the impression that the OP was talking about messing or urine. Just the body odor. Any cat I've ever owned used a litter box or went outside to do it's business. Some of the cleanest domesticated animals I've experienced. I don't even notice body odor from mine.

Cats have body odor? Why wasn't I informed?

Usually when I hear somebody denigrating cats it turns out that they have little or no experience with one. My Sophie is clean, self sufficent, and, rather than aloof, friendly without being needy like so many dogs can be.

We had a cat in the family that developed a bad habit...it would wait for me to open an instrument case and would immediately get in and relieve itself. I found nothing that would eliminate that smell, let alone clean the lining to a degree that I ever wanted to put an instrument back into the thing. Pitched out three cases in short order and learned to take my instruments out of the case in a closed room, with the cat shut out. Followed by closing and clasping shut the case. Did that for a number of years before the cat went to meet its maker...

There are a half dozen cat owners here that will say no cat would relieve themselves in a case. I know they would by the way. If the inside of that case smells right then any cat will have it's way with the case and I don't mean body odour. I mean Eau De Kitty Cologne.

The second time a cat relieved itself in my instrument case, it would have met its maker immediately, and been disposed of in the case.

I like most cats, which is why I gave the hypothetical kitty a second chance. In real life, maybe not so genially disposed. I'm not particularly indulgent toward some self-willed arrogant quadruped, whom I support with room, board and free medical care, editorialising with its bladder, and forcing me to take extreme measures to preserve my property.

YMMV, of course. If pressed, I could be induced to send said hypothetical cat to anyone who felt strongly that cat urine is an adornment to a musical instrument. Although parts might be useful for fiddle strings.

There was this famous physics guy and he never knew if his cat peed in his mandolin case or not because he never opened it.

The "natures miracle" product sounds interesting. I've tried Odo-ban with mixed results. If a young male pees in your case you may be in for a new case. I once had my young tom cat spray my ABS suitcase. I kept the case in the attic and about 20 years later the smell was gone. (yes that long.) Someone should look into that molecular binding thing, maybe it could be useful. I hope it wasn't a Calton or equal. But hey, its a good excuse to get a new one, case that is.

I had a really smart cat once who took revenge on me for leaving him for a few days (he had a pet sitter). When I got home, he stared right at me and peed in my recliner. I used an professional enzyme liquid on it (following directions is very important with this) and it worked quite well when I was certain that chair would be out by the road.

There was a series of 1980's Ibanez Jem electric guitar cases that were made with a lining glue that smells "very similar" to cat urine......there are numerous fan sites where these cases are described as having a "chemically" smell and while 100% legitimate, it doesn't make them any easier to sell -- especially if the subject of smell is asked or volunteered.......no known agent will remove this smell completely....

Someone hinted at the virtues of cats vs dogs, which pretty much divides the crowd, BUT I THINK ALL WILL AGREE that dog urine is virtually odorless when compared to cat urine -- not that either is a box of chocolates....a bed of roses?.....a walk in the park?........

For one I'm allergic to cats! Can't breath well, runny nose the works, just the thought of one in my F-5 case gives me the twinge so yes I know cats! 2 sisters growing up so I have experience with them for sure so I'll stick with my original post! Cats can also be seriously vindictive to their owners, just saying!!
