    Question Question about Niles Hokkanen's "Bluegrass Up the Neck"

    Here's a question about Niles Hokkanen's "Bluegrass Up the Neck" that only those who own the book will be able to answer! On page 4 (and many other places), the fingerboard diagrams show dotted lines that connect some of the finger positions. Why are those dotted lines there? I'm loving the book, but haven't figured out those dotted lines yet!

    You could ask Niles. His Cafe username is mandocrucian.

    Rick, I believe that’s the closed position diagram. If you play those two notes you have a double stop.

    It's just to highlight the two different chord doublestops using the first finger, on a neck chart. In tab, it would be like:

    =========
    =======5=
    ==5====9=
    ==7======

    You can think of those as the "anchor positions" or "anchor fingerings" for your chord position.

    and for Major Chop shape (D chord in this example)….
    =============
    ==5=======5===
    ==4===4===7===
    ==7===7=======

    Just a way to mentally visualize the shapes....

    Got it! Thanks for the explanation. This book is EXACTLY what I'm needing at this stage of the journey, and double stops are something I've been messing with/obsessing with for the past few months as well. I couldn't be a happier camper!

    @mandocrucian

    Speaking of “Bluegrass/Up The Neck”. I just received it in the mail, and I was wondering if there is any place you can buy and download the tracks that originally came with the book on a cd.

    I received “Up the neck” from Elderly before the weekend, but the CD wasn’t there. Is there anywhere I can buy and download the contents online? Best regard Johnny Hide

    Call elderly. It should come with the CD. Mine did last year. And it’s advertised on their website: “ Now includes 76-minute CD! Booklet in note/tab. 43 p”

    I guess I’ll have to contact them. I thought maybe the CD had been replaced by some download since “nobody’s” using CD’s anymore it seems.

    When someone has a problem with a defective or mislabeled disc, or missing pages in a book, etc. they should contact the place they ordered the item from, which in most cases, would probably be Elderly. Elderly will have the pertinent details regarding your order of that item and will tell you if they want you to return the defective item (or not) in order to receive a replacement copy.

    In the past, when a few defective discs had slipped through, I offered (to Elderly) to send replacements directly to the customers, but was told that they preferred to deal with the situation themselves without 3rd party involvement, so that they could verify that they resolved the problem. So I sent the replacement discs to them (Elderly). (CDs will have a month/year on the label to make things fast to identify if a defective spool of discs had been involved. That way, a hold could be put on the items instead of them getting sent out and then being returned.)

    I personally spot-test all the CDs to make sure that they will load and play before putting them into the CD window envelopes (and taping or gluesticking the envelope shut) which are attached to the comb binding. I can't say it is impossibile that a book would leave my place without the appropriate CD included, but it would be very unlikely.

    Of course, if someone had ordered the item(s) directly from me, I would be the person to talk to about whatever the problem was, and to remedy
