    Default Not NMD

When tracking website says, "Held in Customs" for 3 days straight during the hottest, driest summer in Britain in 57 years.

    Yeah, that.

    Not NMD.

    Grrr.

    Hi Daniel,

Several years ago, we were expecting a piece of art from an artist in Germany and got a similar tracking message. I forget the exact details, but it was held for an interminable period and then went completely out of view. Nobody knew where it was, probably gone forever. But then unexpectedly, it was delivered in an opened package but in perfect condition. Weird tale, but it's hanging in my dining room to this day.

I hope your wait is much shorter than ours was, but that it has a similarly happy outcome. Don't despair until you really need to.

    Best wishes,

    Bob

I'm with Don - I would be more than willing to bet the that the customs facility is climate controlled, so there is probably no need to be overly concerned. (I was going to say 'Don't sweat it', but that would have been an unintentional bad pun.)

p.s. - Out of curiosity - what kind of mandolin are you waiting for?

I had a dream directly inspired by this thread last night. I have an octave mandolin on the way from Germany that passed through customs and and is now on the way through very hot weather. In my dream I read this thread and began worry about my own package. I then noticed package delivery was imminent. When I opened the box, I found a jumble of parts for two different instruments, presumably one an octave mandolin and the other a mandolin, except they were shrunk down to perhaps infant size. Hopefully this wasn't a prophetic dream.

It's a used Arrow G5, purchased from The Music Emporium. I'd post a link or photos, but TME has already pulled them down.

Ted Eschliman reviewed it once though.

Indeed it might be the exact same instrument.

Got the customs forms on Friday and returned them by email.
Hoping they'll bill me and ship in the next day or two!

Oh, and the temperature here in England is meant to be about 31°C (90°F) today.

Pins and fecking needles man, I tell ya!

Don't know what it's like down in the SE but, although hot, humidity is currently 66% up here. I've not noticed that it's been significantly low in the past few weeks.

It’s been hot and humid here, too...less so in Massachusetts than in NC, but your mando will be OK. The waiting supremely suxx, though!

My octave mandolin should be arriving today, we have a high of 104 not counting the heat index so hopefully it hasn't completely melted.

I hope it turns out well.

Just dealing with something similar, not a mandolin but a used Irish flute purchase. I'm the buyer in the Pacific Northwest, and the seller is in England. We're deciding to wait until Monday to express ship, so it doesn't get held over the weekend. I don't trust that the shipper or customs warehouse would be climate controlled. It's a wooden flute, so similar concerns as with mandolins about heat. At least it's not a CITES II listed wood species, so that level of paperwork is avoided (I hope).

As this is an electric instrument, I'll write about it in the electric section.

Congratulations Daniel! It's a beauty. The wait and anxiety will, over the years, will become part of the lore of the instrument; a story you will tell when people ask about it. I hope you and it have a long, happy life together, making lots of beautiful music.
