Default Flatiron Festival F in estate sale, Newport Beach, CA, July 14

In Orange County with nothing to do? Head on down to this sale!

Several mandolins and a couple of mandolin banjos are mentioned in the description; I am not sure that all of them are pictured. The Flatiron could be a nice find, depending on what they're asking for it.

If I was in the area I'd already be there

I've never been lucky enough to hit one like that.

How come I never see anything like those at estate sales here. They do not say what they are asking for them, so may or may not be a bargain?

The estate sales that I have been to are run like an auction, people bid on an item that they are interested in...I check the newspaper just about everyday looking for a sale that lists all of the items that are going up for bid, never have seen any mandolins listed though...

I never see estate sales like that around here. All our many estates have been held by the same families for multiple generations, some going back to the Revolutionary War era.

Estate sales around here seem to specialize in china settings, Hummel figurines, and heavy, dark-finished living-room furniture. We have some pretty active instrument dealers here who often step in and broker any instrument collections that come up for dispersal.

I'd love to be at this one, if just to look over the various instruments included. There don't seem to be any super-valuable ones, but lots of solid items that a musician or a minor-league collector might like.

I bought a Gibson Nashville Factory Flatiron Festival a few months ago and I love it! I have compared it to a Collings MT, Gibson A5G, Weber Gallatin A Style and Gibson F9 I owned previously, and it is the best of the lot. It depends of course on how it has been cared for and set up. Mine is in great shape from 2001.

Crazy that someone would not take a few minutes to clean it and put new strings on it?

Several years ago a local auction house sold off approximately 350 high end guitars from two private estates. I attended thinking I might score a good deal on a D28 or similar, but the auctioneers knew the value of every instrument and started the bidding high enough that that didn’t happen. Reps from Sam Ashe, The Guitar Center and several other smaller music stores were there in force and did a lot of buying. I didn’t wind up buying a guitar, but the excitement of watching many beautiful guitars being sold along with the day before the auction when I could play as many of the guitars I wanted made it, for me, an event I’ll never forget. Unfortunately, there were no mandolins, and I sometimes dream of finding a similar mandolin auction some day. One can only hope!
