Well, I bought it ...

Turns out to have a repaired headstock break (including a nice big screw through the back of the headstock), and the pickup doesn't work. Eep. Dangers of long-distance CL transactions.

It is probably worth what I paid for it, as a project. Definitely not the bargain of the century.

Must find someone brave enough to pull that horseshoe pickup out and get 'er working again.

It does need a piece of binding reglued, or perhaps all the binding redone ...
Thought perhaps I could get Jason Lollar (he's local) to work on the pickup.

I would wire the pickup hot without any volume and tone controls in the circuit first to determine wither it is the pickup or something else. Other components will usually fail before a pickup.

Right. Pickups are just a big coil of wire and rarely go wrong (though you can get breaks or shorts in the wires - easy to check with a meter). Anything with a moving part, especially the pots are much more prone to breakage, and thankfully much easier to replace.

Remember when soldering around a pickup never use a soldering gun, they are an electrical magnet and will demagnetize your pickup. Use a pencil iron, it doesn't need to have a lot of watts.

Well, there's something rattling around inside the mandolin, so it could be that one of the connecting wires between pickup and pots has come loose. I know nothing of soldering, so I will have to entrust this to someone more experienced than myself.

This mandolin has no removable back panel, so the pickup assembly will have to be pulled no matter what.
