Thread: Need a new music category for this one....

Default Need a new music category for this one....

    Kittel & Co. - Whorls

Amazon doesn't know how to categorize it either. They have it listed as

    Alternative Rock
    Country > Alt-Country & Americana
    Folk
    International > Celtic
    International > Europe
    Jazz

I'll just say it's some of the most beautiful new music I've heard recently. There is just so much gorgeous and unique music being made these days. From Sarah Jarosz to Sierra Hull to Joe K. Walsh to Molly Tuttle to the Harmonic Tone Revealers and so many other great young and not-so-young artists, it seems to me that acoustic music is in very good hands.

Sounds like classical players experimenting with folk music. Some of it is nice but some I find boring.

Sounds like Celtic but not Irish Traditional.

I'm with SB - I immediately heard Celtic. Nice stuff. As a mandolin player - If i were ever to take up a particular genre of music, it would be Celtic.

I was thinking that too but then I heard the sample of the 2nd-to-last track, "Ohmsted", seems entirely different (more like wild old dance music or something) compared to the other tracks. My first impression (subject to revision upon future closer listening) is that whoever's playing the fiddle on that particular tune, 'gets' it as far as not playing fiddle like a classical violinist - they play it like a fiddler, and bring it to life. I might just have to buy that track, to find out if they can maintain that cool vibe throughout the entire tune (Amazon shows that tune as being 7 minutes and 50 seconds long!) or if that's just an intro which dissolves into less-interesting stuff... if they can keep up that groove for the whole tune, that would be great.

Fragmented ITM. Phrases from Irish dance music rearranged. Like Moving Hearts meets Riverdance.

    Celtic Easy Listening.

I won't knock anyone else's music tastes, but for me, that's too drenched in syrup and derivative without being very interesting. I like my alternative takes on "Celtic" drier and closer to the tradition, like Brian Finnegan's "Ravishing Genius of Bones," or Lau's "Lightweights & Gentlemen."

I guess if you'd couple the O'Neill's Collection and a random number generator this would be about what to expect. It takes more than raw material and good playing technique to compose a tune that can pull it's weight.
