Thread: String Winder

    Default String Winder

Anybody know where to get a really good string winder. I had one made by Dudenbostel, but a friend of mine lost it. Doesn't look like Dude is making them anymore. I saw a really cool one listed on Stewmac's website. It is listed as the anniversary model for Waverly tuners, but they said that it's mostly for guitars. Anybody have a really great winder that they like?

You can find nice ones at Wildwood Mandolins. I use them for my mandos.

I shove a bit of blue shop paper towel in the head so it doesn’t hit the other buttons.

Yeah, I have a plastic one that is meant for guitars and it is difficult to use on the inside buttons as it hits the outside buttons. The Dude was just the right size.

    Thanks Steve.
I use a $2 plastic guitar winder. It will work fine if you wind all the strings until they are almost up to pitch then stop with the buttons pointing foreward and finish tuning up by hand.

Mine is similar to this one: https://themandolinstore.com/product...-for-mandolin/

I'm always careful, I can envision bending a tuner shaft with one if I got carried away, although it's never happened

I like my Dudenbostel string winder as well. He had some for sale a while ago. Have you contacted him to check? Seems he made some for the festival season or when he had some extra time. It is as close as I will get to owning one of his mandolins.

I use the one that is a bit that fits a rechargeable screwdriver, which I set on the lowest torq of 2, which will still pop any string.

A reversible screwdriver is the best, it unwinds too. And the cheaper low-torq variety is best, which reduces cost.
Mine has adjustable torq, but they don't seem to make that model any more.

All but the high E strings can be power-wound up to near pitch, the E's have to be brought up the last half octave slowly by hand.

I love Frank Ford's winders. The Dude's were nice but I'm cheap. I use the Jop.

    Just make one.

Here’s the one I made - beside a regular winder - out of a little piece of oak I had in the scrap bin.

Frank Ford makes all of that by hand. They are precision tools.
