ive searched the interwebz over with no luck finding a mandolin tab for cold rain and snow. looking for the mccourys version or the dead. anybody out there in mando land that can help??

Just to confuse things the versions are chorded differently. The McCoury version is the most common chords as was mentioned by Flatrock Hill starting on a G chord and cycling down to F, back and forth. The Grateful Dead will start on D and cycle up to E reversing the chord movement. Molly Tuttle plays a version similar to the McCoury's except in B flat and she holds on to the initial chord longer, stretching it.

Muleskinner and the Rowan Rice versions start on D minor and move to G and hold on to the initial chord longer giving it that haunting, ghostly feel. This seems to follow how Rowan sang it with Monroe as well as earlier versions recorded from old ballad singers during the 1960s.

So the moral is to pick one version to learn it realizing very often other people will have learned it from a different source and you may have to adjust.

But there is no question, with all respect to everyone else THIS is the very best version. It sends chills up the spine and Bryn Davies demonstrates exactly what bass playing is supposed to be. Plus it has mandolin AND mandola.:
