Default Ultimate Bluegrass All Star lineup

If you could organize an all-star lineup of your favorite Bluegrass musicians for a Jam session, who would it be? You can pick one person per instrument.

    Mine would be:

    Adam Steffey - mandolin
    Kenny Smith - guitar
    Andy Leftwich - fiddle
    Jimmy Mills - banjo
    Rob Ikes - dobro
No preference - Bass (I’m not familiar with any bass players really)

    For singing it would be:

    Russell Moore - lead
    Darrin Vincent - baritone
    Don Rigsby - tenor
    Christian Davis - bass

Of course in their own groups each of these guys blend really well, so this lineup might not be much of an improvement, But this is all hypothetical anyway

    That’s before my time... hahaha
Seriously tho, I have heard of that band before but never looked into who was in it. I mainly listen to Pandora while I’m working, so I’ve heard them before a few times. I just don’t always have access to the info on the different groups.
My list is my personal favorites, more of a modern day “supergroup”, but I’ll have to listen to that group more specifically, thanks for mentioning them! I’m constantly running into songs and groups I didn’t know existed before.

    Junior Husky
You all see where I came from... see where I’m going?
    Living players?
    Larry Sparks,
    Wendy Miller
    Mike Lilly
    Rock Bartley
    Roland White
    Frank Wakefield
    Greg Cahill
    Alan Munde
The kid that plays like Lester Flatt
    Tom Gray
    Ron Spears
    Doyle Lawson
The list could go on for a long time!
I’ve been lucky enough to pick with some of these guys so, my take on this thread may be different from some.

Jesse, you need to start doing some real deep research into the historical greats, the more you know where this music came from gives much more perspective as to how far it’s come and where it may go.
    Just a teaching moment.

There was a guy called Jimmy Martin who could sing pretty good...

For me :- Bill Monroe - banjo / Lester Flatt - fiddle / Earl Scruggs - mandolin / Chubby Wise - bass fiddle / Cedric Rainwater - guitar
    That should fix it !!

Seriously - all of the above on their respective instruments. I can think of many line ups of superb musicians, but i'd like to have seen the full 'original' line up on their first performance at the Opry. I can't think of anything that could surpass that.

I still get a massive buzz when i listen to ''The Barrier Brothers'' playing the very first Bluegrass tune that i ever heard - Earl's Breakdown. To have been able to watch the first original Bluegrass Boys full line up at the Opry, must have been beyond description !,

Ever wonder why no one has started a Lilly brothers tribute band? I’d call the band, wait for it....

Well if you are asking about people working currently I would like to hear Chris Thile on mandolin vocals, Kenny Smith guitar and vocals, Bryn Davies Bass and vocals with Noam Pikelny on banjo joined by Jason Carter on fiddle and vocals ...…… Yes I think that could be excellent …
    I love hanging out with mandolin nerds . . . . . Thanks peeps ...

OK here goes :- Dan Tyminski - guitar & vocals / Tom Adams - banjo / Jason Carter + Bobby Hicks - fiddles / Chris Henry - mandolin & Missy Raines on bass. Dan Tyminski's as good a guitarist / singer as any out there. Tom Adams' Scruggs style banjo is terrific. Jason Carter is as good as it ever got IMHO on fiddle,& as i always fo for twin fiddles,i'll go with one of the most awesome fiddlers ever,Mr Robert Caldwell Hicks. Chris Henry's Monroe style (& 'sounding) mandolin, is a must have, & as i've met here once over here,i'll opt for Missy Raines on bass fiddle,

Jesse, go listen to the album band! The first five albums, in order, not the compilation.
