Thread: Fingerboard extension

    Default Fingerboard extension

I have a 1991 Gilchrist F model mandolin and I would like to have the fingerboard extension scooped out to have more clearance between the strings (pick) and fretboard. Can anybody recommend the best luthier to do this kind of alteration? I live in Western New York.

In your part of the country: Bernie Lehmann [Lehmann String Instruments, Rochester]; Bernunzio Uptown Music, also in Rochester, can direct you to others in the area; Zachary Hoyt, banjo maker in Orwell, NY is less experienced overall but scoops fingerboards all the time.

If you don't mind shipping, lots of us [myself included] can do it also, but you can probably get what you need from one of the resources above. Also, Troy Harris is a café member in Poughkeepsie who is an experienced luthier; he is a lot closer to you than I am.

I think that I would avoid shipping a Gilchrist unless it was absolutely necessary.
