    Default John Duffey's Mandolins

Well folks last nigh was a real treat for me. I was invited to Akira Otsuka house last night.
Akira has John Duffy's Gibson F-12 and also his Duck # 2 I had the pleasure of seeing them both and I played a little on the F-12. What a great sounding mandolin. I would say it had a hollow sound and it is loud.
Akira is one of the nicest person you will ever meet.
No pictures, but what a great night.

Yes sir! I met Akira a few years ago and had my hands on the F-12 briefly. Pretty high action -- John was a better man than I, but what a piece of history.

Speaking of Duffey, I came across this yesterday:

Looks like a great lineup for a tribute

That Cd is great and there is also a booklet in there that a real interesting read.
Akira gave me a copy of it last night and signed it also.
He told me that this project took him 15 years from start to finish.
If you can get one you will really enjoy it I promise.
Sever people played on it and they are all listed on all 17 songs.

Ordered the CD last night! Can’t wait to get it, I will save it for my drive to the cottage when I can listen with no interruptions!

He had at least one other prewar converted Gibson. and a few Ducks. I don't think he suffered from MAS.

Yep Uncle Dick Smiths "Duffey F-7 convert!" Now that's one mighty fine horn! John used that in the early-mid 60's. That's the mandolin that showed me the possibilities for F-7's!
