Default Problem: Mortise and tenon neck joint (rattling)

    Hi experts!

Something is rattling inside my Gibson F5L 1996.
Could it be one of the ring washer on the Mortise and tenon joint vibrating?

Anyone here who had this problem?
And how do I fix it? - That kind of tool do I need in order to reach those
    bolts?

I hope someone can help me!
    Have a nice day!

Those neck joints from that era are glued mortise and tenon. The bolts (screws, really) were used as an internal clamping system, and to fine tune the neck angle before the glue set. They were left in place after the glue was cured for stabilization purposes. Weber and some other makers use that system. I never heard of them working loose, but I guess it’s possible. You can reach them through the end pin hole with a really long Allen wrench. What size, I do not know. You could buy several different sizes to try for not too much money but they aren’t readily available that long in stores. Generally they have to be special ordered from a company that carries industrial tools. Maybe someone else here knows what size they used.

Perhaps it's just a loose nut inside of the truss rod cover. I'd look there first.

There are a number of things that could possibly rattle. Sometimes the ears leads us to it, sometimes it's not where it sounds like. Best thing is to try to identify all the things that could rattle, then take a methodical approach to checking each one. Truss rod nuts and washers, and also tail piece covers, are a good place to start. Gentle tightening of loose nuts or screws may solve it. If you have a pickup, check that the jack is not loose.

Thank you all for your replies!

I took a plastic rod and pressed it agains the bottum "mortise and tenon screw"
(through the end pin hole) - and the rattle disappeared.
Well, this is for sure not the final solution, but I located the rattling.
I'll probably have to figur out, where to get one of those long Allen wrench (and the size).

    Thanks !!!!
