    Default buzzing E string

It's not exactly a buzzing sound, sort of a squeal maybe? It's at the nut, because fretted notes sound OK, and it's only on one of the E strings, the farther (from all the other strings) one. The other E string sounds fine. Both E strings same gauge.

I guess the nut slot has to be built up, probably very minimally.

Any suggestions? (Or links to previous threads on this.)

Generally a low nut slot, high fret or fret slot needs a light touchup with a file. Can be other less common things as well.

I found the same thing on one mandolin and I took a four inch straight edge and ran it up the strings in between the two E strings from the bridge toward the nut and found the first fret was not radiused like the rest so I dressed it with a small file and it stopped that shrill sound, the straight edge ran smooth all the way up the neck until it got to the first fret and it hit it so I knew that was the problem...At times frets do pop up and need to be pressed down but this one was seated fine just didn`t have the radius like the other frets...

    Hope that helps...
