WOW! I had to watch that twice. How awful what happened to him. I had no idea.
That b string reminds me of a "B Bender", a modification that links the b string on a tele to the strap. When you pull down on the guitar it bends the string. I don't know if they're still around.

Truly great guitarist. It has been called a B-Bender. As far as I know, Clarence White and Chris Hillman designed it. Jimmy Page and the rest of those guys just followed along. Tony Rice got Clarence White's D-28 and Marty got the Bender. They got passed along correctly to carry on his name.

Clarence and Gene Parsons, who was the Byrds drummer at the time, designed and built the original. Parsons was a machinist as well as banjo player, songwriter and drummer. He still builds and installs the B-Benders. Here is his website.

In the early 1970s when they were touring, they would do an acoustic set in the middle of their shows where Clarence would go to town on Soldiers Joy and or Black Mountain Rag then do a few more acoustic songs with McGuinn playing rhythm and Parsons on banjo. That was the first real flatpicking I ever got to hear. There is even a video out there with one of the sets where Clarence pulled out a mandolin to take a break on one song.

I knew Roland played Mandolin. Quite well, and he played guitar with Monroe. Never saw Clarence play mandolin though, interesting. Funny all the pickers that were originally from the Northeast that became big fans and players of Bluegrass. Clarence, Roland, Bill Keith, Rowan, Grisman.
