Thread: Blue chip model codes?

  1. #1

    Default Blue chip model codes?

I almost dread asking the question, but can anyone briefly explain the model coding of the Blue Chip picks? I couldn’t find a decider ring on either the blue chip site or here (the product descriptions on the BC site are somewhat helpful but not entirely, at least not for one new to this fair country).

TAD = large (or standard size) triangle, TP = small triangle. The # is 1/1000ths of a inch. So, 50/1000 = .05" or approximately 1.25mm. 1R = 1 rounded point, 3R = 3 rounded points (rounded as opposed to beveled). And the bevel can be either right or left-handed.

That's what I know about them.

Oh, and the ever-popular CT55 ("Chris Thile" model) is just a TAD triangle, 1.4mm thick, with a slightly different bevel.

    From their website;

They represent thickness as measured in thousandths of an inch such as 35/1000″, 50/1000″, etc… This is the form of measurement that our machine shop is conversant in and as such became our primary unit of measure for the picks.
To translate to millimeters the 40 would be 1.0 mm, a 50 would be 1.25 mm, and a 60 would be
    1.50 mm.

Thank you! (Especially for the CT, I was really scratching my head over that one!)

The coding is not very consistent but here are some guesses from me:

    TP- Triangular Pick
TP-1R - Triangular Pick with 1 rounded corner
TPR - Triangular Pick with all three Rounded corners
    STP - Small Triangular Pick
TAD - same shape as TP but slightly larger. Not sure what it stands for?
    TAD-1R - TAD with 1 rounded corner
TAD-3R - TAD with 3 rounded corners. I think for consistency with the above this should actually be renamed TADR
TD - "TearDrop" (typical guitar pick shape)
SR - not sure what it stands for but it has very rounded corners - and one of them even more rounded than the others
XR - not sure what it stands for but larger than SR, rounded corners though one of them a bit less rounded than the others
JAZZ - same shape as Dunlop Jazz III (which is quite small)
JAZZ LG - Large version of the JAZZ - same shape as Dunlop Jazz III XL (which is a bit bigger, but not exactly large). This is my current favourite.

CT - Chris Thile signature, KS - Kenny Smith signature.
    Frank Sings But Walt Disney.

To clarify something that may be a question in someone’s mind based off of that statement, I have a TAD-1R, 2 pointy corners, and 1 rounded corner. Rounded as apposed to pointed, not as opposed to beveled. all 3 corners on mine have right hand bevels. Hope that makes sense.

    Yep, same here:
TP-1R 60, one corner rounded, all beveled.
