    Default Star of County Down

This is a mixture of parts written by myself and the excellent arrangement by Evelyn Tiffany’s Castiglioni. The mandolin parts are played on a lovely Phil Davidson Celtic mandolin, whilst the acoustics guitar, in CGCGCD, is a Brook OM, borrowed from my good friend on this forum, Lord of the Badgers. The bass is a Brook Lowman acoustic bass.

    Hope you enjoy it!

I've always preferred the waltz version of this song, but yours is my favourite of the march versions. Really nice!

    Nice arrangement and playing, Robbie.
I'm playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order. - Eric Morecambe

Sounds real nice! Fantastic interplay between guitar and mandolin.
The Phil Davidson mandolin sounds great.
Like Gelsenbury, I prefer the waltz version of this tune.
There's quite a nice arrangement of it in Marilynn Mair's Complete Mandolinist:

But your rendition is so good, that maybe, I'll try to master it in 4/4...

That is the best arrangement of the even time version I have ever heard! You are getting great tone out of that mandolin.

My favorite arrangement of the waltz time version is by the Buckhannon Brothers, starting at 20:25 on this video:

It is also on their "Little River Stomp" CD, which is excellent. That is, if you can find it. I think it may be out of print.

    Nice arrangement and playing.
My wife and I are headed to Northern Ireland tomorrow and for our first night we'll be staying right "near Banbridge town,in the County Down" so we'll have to go there to take a look, as I was in a band that performed that song. The next day we'll head up to Derry, and will probably see "Derry Quay". I love going to places found in tunes .

Thank you everyone for the lovely comments. Must admit I am only familiar with the 4/4 version of this tune. I first came across it years and years ago on a quite new agey album with hammered dulcimer. Over the years I’ve arranged it in all manner of guises, including guitar solo, and even bass solo. In the version you hear here, my band sing the Bandridge Town lyrics. There is an interesting version of this tune sung by Van Morrison, which first turned me on to the fact that this tune need not be played as a dirge!

I wish I'd read that sooner as I live 3 miles from there, so could probably have got to some good local sessions with you. Hope it was worth the trip!
For a truly local version check iTunes for 'Voice of the Bann'; their first CD has a version of this song performed in the town itself... not that I provided any of the musical accompaniment etc ahem....
