That's really wonderful, He for sure deserves the honor! Great ole recordings I still love of his bands. Very nice humble player when I met him years ago.
I am not a bluegrass guy, but I do consider myself a Roland White fan.
As they say these days; 'Props to Roland!'
Well Deserved!

Met Roland a few times, once a long conversation about his approach to melodies. His sometimes 5th harmony vocal with the NBB, and his mandolin breaks are definitely his own. Subtle notes that that give his music that WOW response. Roland is one of a handful of bluegrass mandolinist who have “their own specific brand.”
And he’s generous with his knowledge. Deserving!!!
I Look at his instructional book with 2 cd's often too...……………
Seems a chill dude...………. as was Clarence I understand.
Their work with the Colonels alone ……………………. too much
Congratulations Roland on a well deserved honor.
He probably doesn't remember but I got to meet him and have a little chat with him at an IBMA show in Owensboro KY back in the early 90s. He was a hoot!

Super dude and was part of so many vital bands and key recordings back in the formative and post-formative days. His album pictured in this post is wonderful and includes the C&R White-penned number Powder Creek, which the brothers wrote at a NJ Turnpike rest area after observing some hippies partaking in some, ahem, questionable practices
Yayyyyyy! I’ll get to meet him at camp bluegrass in Levelland this July. Hope I’m in his class too.

The story goes Roland and Clarence recorded that tune in the men's bathroom in the rest area in NJ so they wouldn't forget it...

Asked him about the fried egg in the shot on the flip side of that album once.
In his so calm and straightforward way he said “ No, it s a real egg, we just fried it a loooong time first.”
I have been lucky enough to have spent a few hours with him in “non musical” situations, after a gig at the Ark in AnnArbor one night very late, and at a dinner for the boys in Country Gazette at a friends house with Alan Munde, Joe Carr and Bill Smith.
I don’t know that he’d remember me from Adam’s off ox but, he made an impression on me. What a nice guy!

Roland taught me Clinch Mountain Backstep and a few other fiddle tunes during a week at a folk school camp a few years ago. I still carry his business card in my mando case. What a great guy he is.
It was incredible! What a cool guy, he was one of the first people to sign a friends banjo head when she was still just scared to death of performers and the approachability of them was new to her too. They have become fair friends and keep in touch. The same weekend, Charlie Waller was so generous to her as well, singing the banjo head then looking at her and saying “Now, should I DOT that I real hard!?” Made her jump then they both had a good laugh but, Roland was the first!
I’ve got a few Roland stories.

Here he is as guest instructor at Butch's 1994 World Of Mandolin 3-day class, via a screen grab of some video shot at the seminar. He has a nice, relaxed way about him, and his grace and ease came through loud and clear.
AlanN what a great shot, thanks
