I've been looking around for something "expand" my very limited horizons to date. #A lot of my friends play the blues on the guitar and I would like to join in with them, but I'm still a newbie (less than 6 months playin' so far) and need guidance/instruction to do this. #I haven't been able to find any books on this to date.

Any help here would be much appreciated.

Homespun has a pretty good DVD by Steve James. It's called "Learn to Play Blues Mandolin."

My blues guitar buddies insisted that I play even when I really didn't know how and I picked up a lot just leaning over my mando and picking quietly until I found something that worked. I also have and recommend the DVD referenced above. And I have Budd Orr's Mandolin Anthology from Mel Bay that has a short section on rock and blues with movable scales and chords (plus lots of other genres; I really like that book).

An expert on Blues mandolin is Rich Del Grasso. He writes a regular column on the topic in Mandolin Magazine and is planning to do a book on blues mandolin. His instruction book on mandolin in general is a basic one, but quite good. Published by Hal Leonard.

And in keeping with the theme of self-promotion, you could buy my performance DVD "Hootenanny!," which is primarily a blues DVD with some old-time country sprinkled in there. Good for getting ideas and watching it played in context.

You can PM me to buy it or go to: Hootenanny DVD at G. Bonham's site and look in the Store section of the site.

Thanks for this 30 second infomercial.

    More resources:

    Free online blues mandolin lessons

Mike Perry's chord progression info - includes a *VERY GOOD* blues chapter

Weenie Campbell - old acoustic blues info and check out the juke box

Also, if you go out to AllTabs search page and select mandolin as the instrument and blues as the category you will get a bunch of tabs to learn from.

I wanted to add a link to this post abot a music theory book as a resource also. It has a play along CD and while it isn't strictly blues, it does have a lot of blues in it.

I enjoyed the Steve James video too. It's worthwhile - check it out.

You should give a listen to the studio version of "Love In Vein" by the Stones. It's a perfect example Ry Cooder's blues mando. Don't let the key throw you; I think its recorded in Bb but you can move it.

Cool. Thanks folks for the help here. I actually bought the Blues DVD and the "learn by ear" CD's from andy in here and the blues DVD is sweet. I'm gonna have a bunch of fun playing the blues on this thing. Amazed at how cool it is to start putting a good blues rift together... Of course, I still gotta keep working on Salt Creek, but it's all in the journey, right???
