    Default Mandolin Music in NYC?

I have a girls' trip to New York City next month and am wondering if anyone knows where mandolin music might be played. Unfortunately, I won't be taking my own instrument, but would love to hear others play. Any genre is OK.

This link will be very helpful.

Also, Google “Mona’s Monday Night Bluegrass Session”. That’s the one to catch if you can only join one!

Have fun, I travel to NYC 2x monthly (at least) for work and know the city well. Feel free to PM me if you have other questions (music related or not).

Jim Kendrick, a NYC Mandolin player, runs this site of NYC music events: Jim’s Roots and Blues.

The New York Mandolin Orchestra rehearses on Tuesdays on the upper west side near Columbia.

+1 for Andy. Caught him in the back room at Barbes in Brooklyn last week and it looks like he plays there often, although I believe he has some Manhattan engagements in the near future. Just check his website close to your travel dates because he's amazing.

Thanks for all the responses. Currently waiting for Andy Statman to arrive at the synagogue. Been visiting with the others in his trio. They're a hoot.

Chris, thanks for the PM offer. I may take you up on it on a future trip.

Andy Statman was amazing. Our group of 4 stayed afterward and visited with him. One of my friends, who is also my mandolin teacher, is a professional violinist. Andy offered to let me play his mandolin. I only play from standard notation, so embarrassed myself with a really poor rendition of a G major scale. Should have played a few chords instead. He also gave me some (unsolicited) tips. I'll try to post a pic when I get home and can refer to my cheat sheet.

Kathy, please share if you find good mando music on one of your NYC trips.

Did you happen to catch what mandolin he was playing? It seems to me that he retired the snakehead a couple of years ago and (like so many of us) has been on the search.

I'm kicking myself that I didn't notice! It was an f style. An older guy named Herman told us he had it specially made and talked like it was extremely valuable. I noticed the neck was seriously worn.

Sherry, I will report any good musical finds I come upon. It’s nice to hear that Andy Statman is not only a wonderful musician but a really nice guy. I have his 2 CD album entitled Brooklyn (I think ) in my car and play it all the time. I’m hoping to get to hear him play at the synagogue too. If you get the chance please post some pictures. Love to see them

I'll need to figure out the pics thing. Am waiting for permission from Andy to post a video or 2 I took of his trio's performance.

Since I saw him last month (as mentioned above) and asked him the same question: Kimble F5.

On the third Wednesday of every month, Sheriff Bob's Goodtimes jam at the Zinc bar on 3rd street has many great musicians. also there is Michael Daves' First Monday Bluegrass Jam at the Rockwood stage 3 ... both are open jams
