Close... a KM900. And the "small fortune" I paid for it was really small - $600 bucks!

If it sounds half as good as it looks, that's $600 well spent.

Is that one of the early 900's? I played one at Fiddler's Green that was a really good instrument. With a bit more setup work, it was probably on par with most everything in the shop that day.

I’ve narrowed it down to three...
    1. 97 Stiver. I’ve always been fond of this particular mandolin it belongs to a friend currently.
    2. Pheonix Jazz Model. I played it and really liked it but just deciding wether the flat wound string thing would get old.
    3. Arrow G5 mandolin. I have not played this actual mandolin but I have played this model before and was really impressed by it.
There’s a couple others too like a couple Heiden and Dude mandolins but deciding if I want take that extra $ step up. Could I be just as happy with one of these is the big question.

Yep... it's an early one from 2009.

I don't know whether the FW strings would get old for you or not, but I can say that the FWs on my Phoenix Neoclassical haven't gotten old for me and it has been my daily player for a while now. I don't foresee a time when it won't be my daily player (YMMV). I love my Phoenix!

    Best wishes,

I am very happy with my mandolin, but it doesn't stop me or most of us here from lusting after someone else's mandolin.

After listening to Tim Connell play it in person and on the video at this link, I am convinced that if I had to acquire one more mandolins, The G5 would be it. The G5 has a different tonal spectrum from what I hear on videos. I even contacted Paul Lestock. Ah, some day.

I agree. I had a chance to listen to and play Tim’s and to be quite frank I was in awe...
Felt like nothing I’ve ever played and I literally can’t say that about any mandolin I’ve owned no matter how great it was.

Steve Sorensen is making some nice A models. Check them out on his webpage: https://www.sorensenstrings.com/. They will not break the bank.

Tim’s Arrow is different than the one at TME. The one at TME is set up with a neck pickup for jazz, like an archtop guitar. It’s five single strings, not double coursed which gives it a different sound.

Someone is selling a Phoenix Jazz on eBay for $2k.

Did he actually buy the Stiver. He must have posted that fact in another thread. I don't see it here.

    Hi Jim!

Thanks for chiming in. Yes I did in fact pick up a Stiver and it is an absolutely glorious mandolin. My Brother liked it so much that he sat and played it for a couple hrs then stood and shouted, thats it! I want one! He is now on the search for the right one. I believe he is looking for a good used one. I also have an Arrow G5 mandolin arriving on Friday which I am beyond thrilled about. I have a feeling my Gil is gonna be a little jealous this weekend...

    Thanks,
    Dem

A Kimble F5 just showed up in the classifieds at a great price. My A-0 is from 2009 and is a wonderful mandolin. Something to consider ...
