    Default Sturgill, Piney Creek, NC

Take a look at these Dave Sturgill instruments. The seller only wants to sell as a pair with the guitar. I think at least one MCer has an A model made by this maker mentioned on this thread.

Sounds like the maker is this guy who passed away in 2004.

I love the look of this oddball mandolin. I wonder if it sounds OK. I esp love that funky rosewood back with the suggestive figuring as well as the fake scroll-oid.

Love the pattern in the back and headstock! Not as fond of the scroll, but if it sounded fabulous, ...........

If they're playable, seems like a great deal. Functional folk art.

I don't know exactly why, but this is what the back of that mandolin immediately brought to my mind. I really like that back!

    Jim,
I just saw the actual listing on CL. My daughter lives in that town and I was considering going to see her in 2 weeks anyway (that's why I looked to see what was available on her local CL). If I do, and the ad is still up, I may go play it!

I seem to be in the minority, but to me, this is the textbook definition of ugly.

I agree but that never stopped me before! Itnis sort of like people who like three-legged, cross-eyed dogs—we feel a little sorry for these creatures.

Hey, my daughter lives in Baltimore, too. Too bad the seller insists on buying both instruments. I never could understand that. "Must buy the pair, as I won't split them up." I don't think they would be lonely if they weren't together. That seems like counter-intuitive to intelligent sales logic.

I look fwd to your report.

Well, he had some darn nice wood and did a nice job of bookmatching it. I don't like the scroll either, but it sure is more complex than it looks at first glance.
    Interesting stuff.

Reminds me of an old Mandolin Brothers ad from 25 or so years ago, somebody found a pair of Martin D-28's from the 40's (1946, I believe) with consecutive serial numbers and Mandolin Brothers wanted to sell them as a "set." I seem to remember they were originally purchased by a husband and wife and remained together all these years. Cool find, for sure, but somewhat limits the sales potential, especially at D-28 prices!
