Thread: Redwood over walnut

    Default Redwood over walnut

Which would sound better: redwood over walnut in an A5 style, or the same combination in an A4 style? Why?

    Thanks.

Do you prefer the warmth and sustain of the oval hole sound or the brightness and percussiveness of the f-hole sound?

Whichever you prefer, I would suspect that a mandolin built out of redwood and walnut would tend to have a darker tone and more bass than a similar mandolin built out of maple and spruce.

To be honest, I love them both. This makes it hard to choose.

You just reminded me of the line from the old Ghostbusters movie:

    "You must choose."

Now I'm going to have to watch the durn thing again.

Walnut is one of the most resonant woods if youre just tapping them. They make great instruments as well. I have a barn full of slabs thats been drying over 30 years.

I went with the f-hole. I already have a Gibson A3 oval hole.

I would ask for the oval hole to be a little lower if I actually commissioned one from Max.

I love Dr. Dave's mandolins and that combo would be exactly what I would want.

If you're building yourself, and you have enough wood, you could build one of each.
