Even Trane played more from arpeggios than mode/scales, although he was the turning point.
I really wasn't trying to give you credit for it - I should have said "The approach you describe." The players who really knock me out - Zoot Sims, Stan Getz, Don Stiernberg, there is no evidence of anything scale-based that I can hear. If they are thinking that way, their melodic sense sure covers it up!
All my life I wanted to be somebody, now I realize I should have been more specific.
