    Default Your MAS Progression

I've only been playing the mandolin (or anything for that matter) for about 5 years, and in that time have really become infected with MAS. I started with a low-end/low cost plywood mandolin and went up from there. It amazes me how fast this condition progresses, and I'm curious as to others' experiences.

    My own progression is:

    1) Rogue-type A style mandolin from Guitar Works (still have)
    2) Michael Kelly Firefly F (sold)
    3) Eastman 515 (sold)
    4) Wasburn Jethro Burns (sold)
    5) Mid Missouri M4 (still have)
    6) Homemade concrete mandolin (still have)
    7) Eastman 514 (traded)
    8) 1915 Gibson A1 (traded)
    9) Bill Pruitt #1 F (still have)
    10) 1989 Stiver F (traded)
    11) 1919 Gibson F4 (sold)
    12) 2017 Tyler White #9 (still have)

I know that some of you have had so many mandolins that you probably can't remember them all, but give it a shot! For the sake of space, (and in deference to the Mandolin Cafe!) let's just consider mandolins instead of adding in other instruments such as tenor guitars, fiddles, etc.

You have a severe case of MAS. Take two aspirin and buy a mandolin in the morning.

Sometimes too many is not quite enough! MAS is an evil affliction.

Harmony POS, Gibson A-3, Larson Bros flat back, Kentucky A, PAC Rim F, Collings MT2, Eastman 815 Mandola, '23 Gibson A, '23 Gibson A2z, 2006 Duff F5 - all have passed through my hands and are back into circulation.

I still seem to catch much better than I release and have one or two in reserve...

    ... followed by a number of years off/on/off/etc ...
    2) Gold Tone GM-55A (to keep me busy while the Flatiron got refurbed in Montana)
    3) Eastman MD514

    5) Eastman MD515
    6) Eastman MD805PGE
... (Do I qualify as a hoarder yet?)
    7) Kentucky KM272 (on its way from AZ)

As far as I can recall, I've never sold a mandolin.

Now I've decided to stop messing around, the next thing on the Must Have list is a Northfield 5-bar Engelmann Artist Series. Just about got enough cash saved for one, and am looking towards this August.

And that should jolly well do it.

Except lately I've been thinking that an old Gibson A-style oval hole, or maybe something current that would be on a par with it, would be nice ...

I lent someone one of my spare mandolins 30 odd years ago, lost touch with them and never got it back. I've never missed it.

Other than that, a red label Yamaha FG180, an electric Epiphone strat copy, a duplicate Martin D18 (which I part exchanged for a National RM-1) and a woodworm-ridden antique harmonium, I still have every instrument I've ever owned. It's not that I wouldn't like more, its simply that ther's no more room.

Here ye go, this spans 10 years:

    1) Jimmy Moon flat top (got this when I was just dabbling with the mandolin and mainly a tenor banjo player, sold it prior to my move to the States in 2008)
    2) Gibson A-40 (1960's) Ebay purchase, didn't stick around long, not my cuppa tea
    3) Flatiron 2N Pancake
    4) Redline Traveler
    5) Weber Aspen II
    6) Pomeroy A4
    7) Weber Custom Gallatin F
    8) J. Bouvier electric
    9) Weber Vintage A
    10) Eastman 905
    11) Mike Black A2Z
    12) Hilburn A5
    13) Gibson A-jr
    14) Collings MTO
    15) space saved for Girouard Concert A w/oval hole!

At any given time the most mandolins I've had at once was 3 or 4 if I recall correctly (the Flatiron, the Redline, the Weber Aspen and the Pomeroy). Wasn't sure whether to include the Mid-Mo mandola or not or if we were sticking strictly to mandolins for this thread.
    2018 Girouard Concert oval A
    2015 JP "Whitechapel" tenor banjo
    2018 Frank Tate tenor guitar

Wow once I write down all of what I have and have had I could've bought a 24 Loar!!!
Here goes an attempt on what I once owned.
    2001 Gibson F-5G, 1914 Gibson F-2, 1982 Gilchrist F-5, 2004 Gibson V-Fern
    2007 Weber custom elite F-5, 70's Ode F-5 "the Monroe", Paganoni DL-8 2004?, 2005ish Kentucky F-5, 2 Collings MT2-V' s in birdseye blonde 04-05, 1937 Gibson F-7 Randy Wood conversion, 1980 Gibson F-5L was Wayne Benson's and modified, 1935 Gibson A-Century, 2 1935 Gibson A-50's with elevated boards and F-holes,
1936 Gibson A-1 converted to A-5 by me and Stiver, 4 late 30's Gibson A-50's with the wide sunburst bodies, these are the ones coming into my head as of now there pry is a few I'm forgetting?
Here are the ones I own now..
    1935 Gibson F-12 original
    1936 Gibson F-5 Fern, original
    1935 Gibson A-50 F-holes,elevated board,original and very F-5 sounding on low end!
    1939 Gibson F-7 original
1939 Gibson F-7 Randy Wood conversion "Loar Buster"-very Loar like in tone and overall voice, very strong and powerful!!
    1937 Cromwell G-6 1 of 7?
4 30's Gibson wide body A-50's in need of repair or I'll keep and modify/convert myself.
I'm waiting for these 2 from Randy Wood a 1934 Gibson F-7 that is getting a new 5 scale maple neck, radiused ebony board with replica 7 inlays scooped extension Florida style, don't like the squared off look on a 5 and tone bars are getting shaved down.
A 1958 Gibson F-5 that's getting a new neck, radiused ebony board with pearl block inlays, full internal Loar 're-graduation, New Loar tone bar placement with a virzi, maybe I'll use the original peghead overlay but will have to plug holes so I can use worm under the gear tuners? Pearl nuts on both and deep neck set angle so from mando top to top of saddle is 1 inch, most mandolins have 3/4 or less.
I also have about 15 Paganoni Loar style cases in different colors because I think they're gorgeous, best cases out there in my opinion, they just have the kool vintage vibe, now only if I can get one with blue interior but I heard there are only 2 of those and well they're for sure not being sold!!!! I'm a sucker for pag cases!

Humm.......a common thread on these lists seems to be a succession of pac rim instruments. If you discount the ultra cheapies, some kept as beaters, you see several Mandolins of the mid level Eastman or Kentucky type one after the other. While no doubt a lot of fun, this suggests a quest to find better tone that IMHO, does not exist. I did this a bit with guitars and vowed not to with mandolins. Once I had my M36 Martin, I did not buy a guitar for ten years.

    Mandolin?

Eastman 505, good enough to get me hooked, but it lasted four months because I kept playing Collings, Northfield and Weber mandolins

Silverangel A, took a chance that for me paid off

Michael Kelly 199.00, just because I wanted something to practice setup skills on. A nice surprise, but I'm not kidding myself. Great beater though.

Lusting for a mandolin with scroll that is brighter than my SA. My Arches build may be that mandolin.

Coming up on two years of mandolin picking. Like to have a teens Gibson someday.

My first instrument is guitar which I began to play 55 years ago. Started to play mandolin on a 1909 Gibson A in the early '80's. Never picked up a mandolin again until 2013. The list is embarrassingly long, but maybe it will be a cathartic experience for me. Mind you, I sell some mandolins to buy guitars, amps and mandolins, so don't pity me for getting rid of some of these nice ones:
Kentucky KM200s (1980's), Kentucky KM650 (1980's), Kentucky KM1000, Mid-Missouri Flat Top, J Bovier A5 Special, Morris A4, Gibson F9, Redline Flat Top, The Loar LM600, Collings MT, Weber Gallatin A5, Gibson A5G, and in the signature you will see where I landed.
