    Default Stewmac ebony veneers

Hello folks, I am currently working on my first build from scratch, I did the IV kit and the StewMac kit, so this is technically my #3. The veneers appear to be on back order for an unknown length of time. I’m hoping to buy some ebony in bulk but it seems harder and harder to find. I am looking for other options...LMI is one option, can y’all give me some more options possibly. I ordered some from LMI but they are filled with streaks...do I use the black ebony stain they sell to make it more uniform? Thanks for the tips.

Do you remember what kind of ebony you ordered from LMII? I’ve bought macassar ebony veneers from LMII, and the macassar is supposed to have streaks. Another species may be more uniformly black. Regardless, you can stain it. I bought some of the black fingerboard stain from them and it worked fine. If I remember right it was just alcohol-based black aniline dye.

It is common for ebony to have streaks. Either learn to like them or dye them.

I had a lot of luck just asking them to make sure they were black.

Allen guitar has 5 packs for $51. I've had good luck with them being dark w/o streaks, and they're thick enough to re-saw one piece into two veneers for the back side. Nice job on the binding of your #3, BTW.

I have purchased peghead veneers from both LMI and Allen guitar. Everything I've received from LMI has been top notch. Wood has been very well surfaced, flat and nearly ready for use. Of the five plates I got from Allen, all are rough cut and somewhat variable in color. 1 is almost completely unusable due to significant Warp. I do agree with Crooksj that the veneers from Allen are quite thick. As long as it's very flat you may be able to resaw into two useful pieces but I have found that by the time I get the peace flat on both sides most of that excessive thickness has been lost...I'll try to post some photos later if that's any help.

Where has all the black ebony gone, long time passing?
Where has all the black ebony gone, long time ago?
Where has all the black ebony gone?
    Luthiers have picked them everyone
Oh, when will they ever learn?

Here are some photos of Ebony from LMI and also Allen guitar. The two finished head plates are from Allen ebony. I'm choosing to embrace the variation in color... We're building with wood, after all.
