I have had several instruments from TAMCO, always excellent service and good value, couldn't be better IMHO.

Hi Michael, it was a mistake and a bad one on my part. I do apologise.

Tell me about someone who's never made a mistake.
I had a problem with a tuner knob on the first mandolin I bought from Trevor - was it really 16 years ago! - and, as I live nearly 300 miles away from TAMCO, Trevor suggested that the simplest option would be for me to buy some new ones (whatever make I fancied) and send him the bill.
My only complaint is that I've now spent too much money on too many mandolins!!
Personally, I find Hobgoblin's selection limited (I've only been to the London branch once) and their prices on the high side. There's little worth in comparing Hobgoblin toe TAMCO.
I have now got around to restringing with Newtones, and of course, you are right about the change in brightness. It's just that the old ones mellowed so nicely - I felt no urgency to replace them (and I do alsoclean my strings regularly...)
I used the method advocated by Paul Busman in his July video, and found it worked very well, although it's tricky to keep the plain steel top strings in place around the peg head whilst pushing the end through the hole.
Very unusually (well, it's never happened to me in my life before on a stringed instrument) one of the top E strings came unwound at the tailpiece end whilst I was tightening up to pitch. I'm confident this is a freak accident, and in no way a reflection on the manufacturer. Newtone readily agreed to send me 2 new strings free of charge. Has anyone else had that happen? (I've had enough fine strings break at the loop on my bouzouki whilst restringing (D'addarios), but never seen one unwind.
(I know, of course, about not cutting the strings at the top end before fitting - Newtone are careful to explain about that)
"What's that funny guitar thing..?"
I’ve once had a plain string unwind, but it was quite old. Not that the age should make much difference I’d have thought? Can’t remember the brand though.
Not really topic related, but The Fellowship of the Acoustics has a real nice range of (Eastman) mandolins nowadays:

I have also had a recent problem with unravelling Newtone strings. I ordered four extra treble strings as spares and I needed them all. It's back to D'Addarios for me.
