Default Red Diamond Feature in latest issue of Fretboard Journal

Nicely written feature that had my MAS going. Favorite piece of info from the story is that Don MacRostie's torrefaction process takes place in a " circa-1980's heavily modified Whirlpool oven." Lots of other neat insight as well.

The whole issue is one more success for Jason Verlinde and company...

Thanks for sharing, Russ. I have one of Don's roasted F5's going on three plus years now. It's a truly remarkable instrument in all regards. Don is beyond a first class, kind gentleman and so very knowledgeable.

Fretboard Journal is such a high-quality magazine. It is visually great, but the content is also superb. Not just a guitar mag.

    I love FJ.

However I sent in a correction to the Red Diamond article for the statement that A-styles and F-styles sound "vastly different", but I haven't sen a response from Jason yet.

Yeah. That comment took me a bit by surprise as well. The rest of the article was outstanding.

Just stirring the pot, but for us mando-geeks that don't play (identify with, have an affinity for, or can even tune) a guitar, could there be any possible way for the publisher to separate the mandolin content from the guitar content and publish a "Mandolin only" compilation?

I would feel like a complete wretch (and have, on occasion) if I sit in the B&N and read the lone mando article without buying the magazine, but also would feel like I was being taken if I ponied up the $$ (what is it, $12 or so) just to read the one article about mandolins that interests me.

I'd be happy to pay full freight it I could get more mando content out of it.

Anyone else have the same dilemma?

If you are a mandolin player AND a guitar player, the FJ is bull's eye on target (it's never too late to become what you might have been).

I just finished the interesting Red Diamond story. Some intriguing comments. "Loars are not inherently better than any other mandolin..." and the already mentioned "traditionally A and F style mandolins have vastly different tone"

Fine magazine tho. Looks great on the table when I'm done reading it the first time

I'm already believing it's too late to become a "mediocre at best" mandolin player! Let's not compound the problem with the "5 4th's and a third" fretboard! (or something like that - again, see original post)

Sorry to bump this old post, but wondering if anyone knows of a way to read this article online? Thanks.

Jay, If you are unable to open the article from the FJ website, I have a copy of the article that I can scan and email to you. Send me a PM with your email address and I'll send it your way.

    Cheers.
