Noone has said Jethro Tull? Anderson wrote all the early stuff on mandolin, though some was later rearranged for the band for recording. Standout mandolin tracks include (but are not limited to): A Christmas Song, Jack Frost and the Hoodie Crow and Fat Man.

In their later incarnation, Fred Tackett sometimes played mandolin with Little Feat.

At the acoustic jam last saturday, I played an early Little Feat song. The fellow next to me asked where it came from. When I told him, he said, "I thought that they were an electric band". Since when did that matter? We play acoustic versions of all kinds of rock and roll.

Paul Barrere and Fred do acoustic shows and have a live cd, all acoustic versions of Little Feat songs. I heard them live a couple of years ago. Fred is a decent mandolinist He is another of those guys who plays everything including trombone.

Of course, Byrds' bassist Chris Hillman played a lot of mandolin, with the Scottsvile Squirrel Barkers and the Hillmen, and a bit with the Byrds.

As for Cooder & The Stones, Ry plays Mandolin on the studio version of Love in Vain, don’t think he did Factory Girl.

Fred plays trumpet a la Miles Davis on several Feat songs. Fred and Paul's live cd is full of interesting acoustic versions of old Feat rockers.

Hank Bentley plays a lot of bouzouki for Crowder along with all of the other instruments he plays, as well as writing. He's pretty active on the Nashville/Atlanta circuit. "Kenny" is his other picker and does most of the mandolin stuff. I haven't seen him with any other artists. I'm still trying to figure out the double stops Rend Collective uses on Build Your Kingdom. Their music is fun to play.

As an aside...Beatles do not have a mandolin on any tracks. The closest to a mandolin sound to my ears is on "For You Blue"
