    Tried it both ways - even taking the DI out of the equation and plugging the pickup directly into the laptop I still get the same problem.

    Have you plugged it straight into a PA, there might be something in the analog to digital converter to into the laptop. What are you plugging into with your 1/4" plug?

    Some photos of what the OP is actually doing might help, as I am baffled...

    Normally, these transducers (though not my favorites) are dead easy to use. Just plug them into an unbalanced high impedance input such as the PASSIVE pickup input on an acoustic amp, or into a high-impedance ACTIVE DI or Preamp and out to the PA and that's that. Some strange stuff going on here.
