Too bad about that top Jill. They must not have any of the good wood left. (Seriously ... i've never seen top wood that beautifully figured. Congratulations to you and Max & Lauri.)

What are the tonal qualities of Poet Orford cedar. Is that the woot combination the one you played had?

    Jim,
Here's what LMI has to say about it: http://www.lmii.com/products/mostly-...t-orford-cedar.
My understanding is that it falls in stiffness between the true cedars and redwood.
My favorite use is for arrows ... i just love the smell of opening an arrow case.

Wow! That's a different cedar than what I have in my mandola. That's going to be gorgeous with Lauri's finish work on it.

Jill congrats, I know you loved your MT 0, I am sure you will be pleased with Max and Laurie's work. That top is AMAZING, at first I thought is was the Maple for the back and you posted the wrong pic. Would love to hear this when it is done.

Yes, I played #99, which had a Port Orford Cedar top and the sound was fantastic - it was nice to be able to both play it myself and also hear it's owner playing it. I found it to be warm and clear sounding with nice mid-range.

Stunning, but are you sure that isn't the back? It looks quite different to any images of Port Orford Cedar tops you see on Google. (I am no expert at all on this, just curious!)

This is the photo that Max Girouard specifically sent me, stating he'd cut into two wedges of Port Orford Cedar and sent me photos from both wedges and I chose this top (the other top on offer had a tighter grain and was probably more like the images you posted Sean). No other photos except examples of the top wood were included in the email. I am confident that an experienced luthier like Max can tell the difference between maple and Port Orford Cedar, so yeah, this is the wood for the top of the mandolin!

Here's some photos of wood for Port Orford Cedar tops on acoustic guitars that shows some curl similar to what is seen in the top wood for my mandolin:

    Looks awesome.

The enjoyment I get out of my A5, as recently as this morning before work, makes me wonder about ordering an oval model as well.

I'm just curious about the tonal differences between the ovals and the f-holed Girouard that I currently own. I don't much care for the "tubby" sounding, older, mostly Gibsons ovals that I have played.

Anyone here with a Girouard of each kind care to chime in with some details?

Blues Healer, Glad you are ordering custom built! Congrats. I really like the look of that maple. The A is a beautiful shape; so comfortable to play.

    Hi Chris,
I haven't played an f-hole Girouard, but I have played plenty of "tubby" old Gibson A's and the Girouard oval A I played (that inspired me to order mine) was most definitely not in the "tubby" camp - that thing rang like a bell!

I'm late to the party as I don't check in as often as I used to. Congrats on the new custom build Jill. If you are curious about an F-hole Girouard, you can check in with Sylvan in Santa Cruz and see if they have any. They usually have at least a couple, and when I was in the shop in '16, the Girouard they had at the time was one of my favorite. I always enjoy seeing Max's and Lauri's work whenever they get posted here, and I do hope I'll get to own on of their mandolins some day. Looking forward to seeing yours on here when it's all done.
