I owned that National 2 for many years but it never sounded good in mandolin tuning with that 15" scale. I restrung it to Yank Rachel tuning (so a "G" chord fingering would sound lower, as E) and it was better, plus I had octave strings on the lower two courses. Beautiful instrument but I never played it and, as noted, I actually play the RM-1.

This is the best guy in the country for refinishing vintage nationals and pretty much the only one outside of National who can do an excellent frosted duco crinkle finish:

Allen, as for your old Pfretzschner bass, I get almost twice the price for them when stripped and polished. 'Same with an old ALCOA.

Yeah, me, too. It takes the right touch, the right strings and tuning and the right music. The RM-1 is a lot more forgiving.

I agree. I guess I could never get used to metal fingerpicks for some reason, the slide was an issue also and the sound never came out right for me.
