Default 1905 Gibson project mandolin from Shopgoodwill!

    https://www.shopgoodwill.com/Item/52517199

Looks pretty good except for the busted neck with the orthopedic repair! Can't be very comfortable to play with the metal plate on the back of the neck.

Has anyone ever seen a stamped serial number on an Orville label before?

That's an awfully white label for a 113 year old instrument.

Yes and blue ink serial #, That was redone wasn't it? Those early Gibson's had penciled in #'s didn't they? It has potential for a re-neck.

That is one nasty neck break . . . and Roger is right, unless it is some sort of optical illusion due to camera flash, or something like that - that label looks awfully white.

    Personally, I'll pass . . . .

There is a lyre label with a stamped SN pictured on Roger Siminoff's site.

    Original pegs, or not?

At $578 currently, teetering on the edge of "too expensive," considering the work that's needed to restore that headstock. Might be as much as the mandolin's selling price. And is the reason that the bridge end is raised off the top, flattening of the top curvature? Could be another issue.

Still, a real "oldie," and it would be great to see it restored.

Oh, it's done sold already. It'll be quite the feat of restoration for somebody.

I imagine that it would require a new repro neck tho there may be some wizard luthier who could work with what is there. Hard to tell from the cracked neck with the smallish photos how bad that crack is. The mystery to me is what those two smallish holes are on the front of the headstock. At first I thought they were from the screws on that metal mending plate but I have a feeling that they are from some other attempt to repair it.

Pretty obvious to me the screw holes are left over from when the instrument had a Floyd Rose trem system. They held down the strings in the locking nut.

It's still not as ugly as the one I tried at a local GC (also mentioned on the list). Hopefully this can be brought back from the dead and made into a nice player.

Really a shame about the peghead and the botched repair, otherwise looks like a pretty nice instrument. Kinda like the old joke, "Aside from THAT, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?"

OTOH, some repairmen are capable of amazing things!
