Thread: Tab(s) on rough mandolin tops?

Default Tab(s) on rough mandolin tops?

I am a newbie, still working on completing my first mandolin, an F5 style. Looking at the various references that are available, particularly online, I often see builders who keep what looks to be a tab extending from one or both ends of their top plates. Sometimes the tab(s) has a small hole in it. What is this for? Something for a clamp to grab and keep it held down? A way to hang the top/mandolin for finish? I can't seem to find an explanation. Thanks.

I use those to screw the plate down to the work bench and carve inside contour, then turn The plate over and do the same for outside rough carving

Those who use CNC machines use them for locating pins. I planned to use such positioning pins for gluing backs and tops onto ribs while still in body form.

Basically you need something to clamp down, and this allows you to access the entire plate while not damaging it with the surface of the clamp, and without covering up any part of the plate that you might want to work on.
