Default What kind of tailpiece is this?

I always assumed Don used a James tailpiece on the Red Diamonds. From this picture it looks like the strings are hooking onto the bottom lip of this tailpiece. Can anybody shed any light on the make? Is this a new product or have I been living a sheltered life? This Red Diamond is in the classifieds and for sale at Carter's.

I wondered that, too. The first thing I noticed, beyond the color, was the way the strings had zero inward angle behind the bridge.

I believe you can buy strings in bulk that aren't curled into little packages. They come in straight in bundles. I'd be willing to bet those strings aren't attached to anything. They're just laying there. Just a hunch.

It's a Price tailpiece. Don used the other style of Price tailpieces too.

OK, I'll look at the Price tailpieces. I've never seen one.

Added: Not a whole lot of information out there it seems. It is definitely that same tailpiece.

From what I can tell, Gary Price is not making any mandolin tailpieces these days.

There's probably a reason why you and I had never seen one. I'm guessing there weren't that many that hit the market.

There were at least 3 configurations of Price tailpieces. I owned both of the 2 illustrated here. I liked the one-piece but not the 2 piece. The 2nd picture is with the cover off of the tailpiece. The cast cover looked like a traditional tailpiece cover. It was a pain to put on and off. I've not seen the one with the hooks under the leading edge. Isn't that the design that Rigel used?

I've seen the one on the left but never knew who made it. I don't recall seeing the one on the right.

I may have a photo of the complete one somewhere. I had it on my F5-G when it got sold.

When you changed strings, you had to make sure the little sharp ends of the windings were pointed down on that tailpiece on the left, or your right arm would get scratched or your long sleeved shirt would get frayed. I think I covered my tailpiece with velcro. I think some Phoenix mandolins also came with the tailpiece on the left.

I think I've seen those TPs on some Red Diamonds. If I'm remembering correctly, they do something funny, like flipping the cover up from the side rather than the top. Or am I just hallucinating????

It doesn't look like there's a moveable cover at all but I have never seen one in person so who knows.

The one on the left is a fixed cast tailpiece with no movable parts. I can't find a good photo with the cover to the cast one on the right. The cover to it was fairly heavy.

I'll try to post a pic. I have that tail piece in a unfinished brass. We used to do a lot of business with Gary down at banjo.com and I wanted one for my mandolin. Gary called up one day and we were discussing ordering one of his banjo cases and mandolin case for a customer. I remembered the tail piece and asked him about it. He had one unplated and he give me a really good deal on it. I still have it and I'll try to post a pic of it.

The one on the right looks similar to the bottom part of the tailpiece on my Brentrup. The top sets on and slides about 1/4" to lock in place and is heavy brass. I like it without the top for sound, I let the strings stay on top and rest on the pad instead of going under the end of the tailpiece.
