    Default Underrated Players?

Start talking about great mandolin players, and immediately you are bombarded with names Like Chris Thile, Sam Bush, Jethro Burns, Dave Grisman, Bill Monroe, etc. But my question is this: Who do you think are the best underrated players . . . guys/gals who you think deserve MUCH more attention than they get? Those folks whose names should be up there with the folks mentioned in the first sentence of this post?

Andrew Collins, Jake Jolliff (YMSB), Caterina Lichtenberg, Don Stiernberg, Joe K. Walsh, Alon Sariel, Matt Flinner, Simon Mayor, Marc Atkinson, Tristan Scroggins, Tai McGillivray to name a few off my head. Let's not forget John Reischman.

I like this thread. There are so many great players out there that kind of get lost in the shuffle for whatever reason. It's always fun to find "new" players and what they've done.

Don Stiernberg, Mike Marshall, I like Sierra Hull and Sarah Jarosz, but think both of them are going to be more known for their musical style than just sheer picking.

Innvocative thread ! Honestly, to have a real conversation about "underrated" mandolin players I think you need a whole classification system....like three or four, or maybe even five categories. And really... there are those who contribute to greatness in different ways, playing talent, teaching talent....groundbreaking techniques and styles. I agree with you that "Chris Thile, Sam Bush, Jethro Burns, Dave Grisman and Bill Monroe" all belong in a "hall of fame- star on the sidewalk" category. Anyone else underrated and belongs there? How about the category of player right below knocking on the door who have pushed the boundaries and affected all of us: Marshall, Flinner, Steffy, Julin, Statman, Skaggs. And so on into the next category....with Sierra Hull, Paul Hoffman, Nate Lee and David Benedict nipping at their heels.... and countless others with so much talent out there that belong in that category or the one right below.

Oh well......on the other hand, perhaps instead of focusing on where these players rank, we should just embrace and be thankful for all the talent and contributions that every talented mando player has made to our community.

Emory Lester definitely belongs there. I am another who feels Jimmy Gaudreau belongs on the list of greats. Tim Connell is a really good up and coming player.

After listening to Sierra twice on her last tour, I would vehemently disagree with the statement she will be known more for musical style than her playing. She is already an outstanding player and if she continues to progress it is difficult to imagine how far she will go.

John Jorgenson is an outstanding mandolin and bouzouki player but his skills on other instruments and range of musical styles overshadows them.

With the possible exception of Bill Monroe, I cannot find anyone outside of a mandolin aficionado who would recognize any of those names. Yes they are great, and there are others that don't get as much attention, but in terms of notoriety in the general culture, it is a lot like bragging that you are closer to the moon because you are on top of the porch roof.

I assume that we are talking about our little Mandosphere here. I agree that outside this bubble most mandolin players are not well-known. Well, Maybe Chris Thile since he is now an emcee of a national radio show. Maybe Jethro Burns would be known to old time country fans.

I have heard of most of the names mentioned here, but maybe not all.

That is true, Chris Thile does have a following outside of the bubble, with the radio show. How many of them know that the instrument he plays is a mandolin, well....

Before the radio show, most people outside of our bubble that I interact with knew his name as being the husband of Claire Coffee, or some knew him as "that genius grant guy".

This list could on a long time as there are so many really fine mandolin pickers out there and I guess you mean still living but you did mention a few dead ones. So I would add: Dewey Farmer, Herb Lambert, John Duffey, Roland White, Donna Stonemen, Rhonda vincent, Alan Bibey, Rick Alread, Jeff Foxall, Tony Williamson, Jerry Stuart, Buzz Busby, Red Rector, Dean Webb, Frank Wakefield, Ralph Rinzler, Jon Jorgeson, Aubrey Haney, Herschel Sizemore, Joe Val, Brian Alridge, Ronnie Prevette, Chris Hillman, Andy Owens, Norman Blake, Ronnie Reno, Darryl Wolfe, Charlie Derrington, Gene Johnson, Mike Marshall, Larry Sledge, Mike Compton, Butch Baldassari, Stuart Duncan, Earl Taylor, Pee Wee Lambert, Bobby Clark, Barry Mitterhoff, Red and Chris Henry and the other 100 I can't seem to recall at the moment.

I don't think of any of those guys mentioned as ''underrated'' - simply 'not on the radar' for many of us most of the time.

One of my own favourites,is Robin Bullock. He's ''off the planet terrific'',but how often do we see his name mentioned on here ? - very rarely indeed, mainly i suppose because he's not a Bluegrass picker,as are many others not mentioned so often,

Re: the "outside the bubble" fame ... the folk who are not mandolin aficionados but who recognize a mandolin player. I've found that all Deadheads know who the Dawg is even if they don't know who Chris Thile is. Likewise, I have a bunch of musician friends who are way into Bob Wills, and they know about Jethro and Tiny Moore even if they never heard of Sierra Hull, Chris Thile, or Texan Sarah Jarosz.

I often forget that Ricky Skaggs is a really great mandolin player and then some JD Crowe and the New South comes up on YouTube or Boone Creek pops up on Spotify or he shows up in my town. Not my favourite mandolin player but pretty darned good.

Truth is, there's so many great players it seems like it must be the easiest thing in the world to achieve, Right? A couple in this neck of the woods that immediately come to mind are Peter Ostroushko and Richard Kriehn. Both those fellows seem as skilled and creative as just about anyone else I've heard and the nice thing is they seem comfortable to stay low key & play around town from time to time. Don't spoil it by blowing them up bigger than life!
