    Default Greek Bouzouki Action

Hello all! What do you feel would be a reasonable action range for a Greek Bouzouki at the 12th fret?

My OM has about 2.5mm with a 20" scale, sorry for the mixed units!

So you should be. Everyone else in the UK seems to use football pitches and double decker busses nowadays

For Ray(T)'s benefit the action is 0.00137 fathoms with a scale length of 0.025 chains (1 chain is about a wicket in length) and I paid 23,340 groats for it.

    Hope that's clearer

I would tend to use "ideal" acoustic guitar setup as a starting point - so 2mm on the bottom strings down to maybe 1.5mm on the top. But... if it's lightly strung compared to a guitar (and I think it will be), then you'll need to go up on that, so 2.5mm is probably a good initial target. If you have buzzing, remember that the 2 strings in the pair can bash into each other as well as hit the frets, so you need to be able to differentiate between the two in order to debug a buzz. HTH, John.

Low! Most Greek players want the action very low for speed.

Low could be different for individual instruments & different playing styles, scale length, string spacing & string tension.
Low is as low as you can manage without buzzing...
As has been mentioned - 2.5mm is a good starting point.

That's a good place to start.

    1.75mm at 12th fret 4th string.
    2.25mm is way too high.

(A one cent Euro coin is 1.67 mm, it should be able to squeeze between string and 12th fret with a tiny bit of room. A US quarter is 1.75 mm).
