    Default First Monroe Brothers recording

Cafe says february 7th, 1936 was the first Monroe Bros. recording session.
According to Neil V. Rosenberg and Charles K. Wolfe, it was on february 17th.
    What is the right date?

According to the liner notes for Monroe Brothers: Feast Here Tonight (RCA AXM2-5510), the two-LP reissue of their recordings, the first Bluebird session was Feb. 17, 1936, in Charlotte NC. Bill and Charlie recorded nine songs:
    My Long Journey Home
What Is a Home Without Love
What Would You Give In Exchange?
    Little Red Shoes
    Nine-Pound Hammer Is Too Heavy
    On Some Foggy Mountain Top
Drifting Too Far From the Shore
In My Dear Old Southern Home
    New River Train.

-- At least, these are the ones included in the reissue; can't say for sure if there may have been others.

    Last Victor/Bluebird session was Jan. 28, 1938.

The 7th may have been the day they were in the studio and the 17th may be when the record was introduced for sale...

The thought just hit me and I am just guessing...

Feb. 17 is listed on the album as the session date -- when the recordings were made.

I think a "1" just fell out of the date somewhere during transcription. If Rosenberg, Wolfe, and Doug Green (album liner notes) all agree on Feb. 17, I consider that pretty much "nails it."

As Allen says,if Neil Rosenberg & Charles Wolfe quote a date / time etc. - that's it !!. If anybody's interested in dates etc. of Bill Monroe's recordings, then the book ''The Music of Bill Monroe'' is a must have !!. It also contains a huge amount of info.regarding the songs, the period etc. all in all, a superb & very well researched book,

Do you think that in those days they could record a whole album in one day? Maybe the first day in the studio was the 7th and they finished on the 17th...

Does it make any difference anyway? If the OP is like me I like to find out stuff even though it doesn`t mean much to some other folks...BUT when a recording was made or completed isn`t one that I search for...But that is what he wanted to know, and he got some great results from some of you that have that info, either in your minds or from a book for reference...

Let me quote Doug Green's liner notes from the Victor reissue:

The Monroe Brothers recorded 60 songs -- 10 in each of six recording sessions -- for Victor within a period just two weeks short of two years...Personnel on the sessions consisted of Charles and Bill Monroe exclusively...The first three sessions were recorded on the second floor of the Southern Radio Corporation Building, 208 South Tryon Street, Charlotte, North Carolina. Southern Radio was Victor's regional distributor, and the recording was done in a storage area, stacks of 78's and stored phonographs acting as baffles. The location of the final three sessions was moved to Rooms 1050-52-54 of the Hotel Charlotte...

Nine of the ten songs from the first session, Feb. 17, 1936, are included on the Victor reissue; I've listed them above.
