    Default Acapella Bluegrass Songs

    Hey There,

My band is heading off for "band camp" . A weekend of hanging out, drinking beer, and working on new material. We do a lot of harmony singing and I'm hoping you all can suggest some good songs we can work up to perform acapella.
Currently our big one is "Up Above My Head" - similar to the way the Nashville Bluegrass Band did it.

    What say ye? Suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Kirk

Who Will Sing For Me sounds good acapella
Any BG song with a gospel feel can sound nice acapella. imo

Check out the Daley and Vincent CD “Singing From the Heart”....

    Just awesome a capella singing.

It’s gospel music, but gospel and bluegrass go well together...

I like "Gloryland" from Ralph Stanley, and he has a whole album of a cappella gospel songs, Almost Home.

"Talk About Suffering" is one Ricky Skaggs has done on several albums, including Skaggs & Rice.

Thanks for the ideas - and keep them coming!

I just found this - gotta love Blue Highway (or you shouldn't be in the Bluegrass section of the Cafe!).

Zac Brown does Fox on the Run with part acapella that sounded great.

Ralph Stanley singing "Oh Death" is another powerful tune.

Most acapella bluegrass songs might be religious in nature but since you indicated you might be drinking a bit, how about an acapella drinking song..........

Cold Jordan works well. My band used to do Fox on the Run from one guitar chord. Usually rocked the house!

"How Can I Keep From Singing"is a great one, but I have never been able to arrange it for two voices that I was pleased with. 3 minimum works well.

I also preform Shawnee Town on river cruises and it always goes over well.

Sorry, just noticed you wanted bluegrass songs, these are not, but are great ones.

We will usually put down our beers for the gospel portion of the show...

We are traditional but not strict...we do the occasional Dylan tune. I'll give those a listen.

Thought of another, Blues Stay Away From Me could be done a cappella, with just an acoustic bass it makes a great arrangement.

Where the Soul of a Man Never Dies seems like it would be really good a capella. I'll be Waiting on the Far Side Bank of Jordan might be good that way too.
