Thread: What is this chord 6-4-0-0?

    I'm hoping that it is an acceptable version of F#m, which is almost always shown as 6-4-0-2, but for a beginner, that 2nd fret on the E string kills and I always dampen the A, which I want to ring open.

    Make a virtue of necessity and damp the open E.

    Or keep practicing to make that index finger comfortable. It's not about pressing harder, but using just enough pressure in exactly the right place, and that takes practice finding the chord.

    F# A C# E is F#min7, typically II, III, or VI chord in major key. And same notes re-ordered A C# E F# is Amaj6, I chord function, a bit more stable sounding than Imaj7.

    What that is is a cool chord. Take an interesting rhythm and strum it with your thumb and you'll see what I mean, use pinky to damp when necessary. I like it.

    I like 640x for F#m when playing tunes in A. I try not to play the E, but if happens to peak out, it still sounds better to me than 679x

    This is an F#m. For an F#m7 I use 6-4-7-5 (C#-F#-E-A or V-I-vii-iii)

    To my understanding, when you say, "major 6th" the natural 7th is implied, as it is in the name "major 9th." I would call it simply A6.

    Not exactly. A 6th chord, a.k.a. major 6th, has no 7th.

    A6 = A C# E F#

    (also an F#m in inversion)

    The "major 6" is an older use when 6th chord were not so common. Also to distinguish from a minor 6th chord.

    Am6 = A C E F#

    (also an F# half-diminished or m7b5)

    It sounds really nice in a F#m E D progression just moving those two fingers down two frets at a time and cross picking
