It's not complete but this is the only live video of this performance I've been able to come across.

I would love to see much much more of this. To demonstrate that a mandolin playing classical music is not a stunt but has a legitimate place in all genres. And also for Chris Thile, to demonstrate too the world the same things, that he isn't just playing difficult Bach to over awe us but that he can be an integral part of music expressed classically.

    Wonderful stuff.

Those of you more up on what Chris has been doing would know, but I would bet, though I cant remember, if has done other other classical ensemble recordings in the last eight years since this one.

This is the first part of Thile's mandolin concerto. The level of technical performance skill here is astounding; the mandolin part is extraordinarily difficult, and there cannot be more than a handful (literally) of people in the world who could play it with the same fluency (I once had a conversation with Steffen Trekel about this, he thought there wasn't anyone else who could play it). From a composition point of view, the level of skill is world class contemporary; it is a superb piece (that I wish Thile would publish, so that those among us who wished to could study the score). The brief passages with duo style are especially striking. Anyone who thinks that Thile is not really a "classical" player has no idea.

I seriously would love that as well. Maybe https://classicalmandolinsociety.org can get Thile in for a convention.
