Thread: Campanella Due

  1. #1

    Default Campanella Due

I thought I'd share some pictures on my new Campanella Due that I order from Joseph Campanella Cleary.
For the past few years I'd been feeling like my old mandolin was fighting against me and I needed an upgrade. I started looking into luthiers near me and remembered hearing of Joe in Burlington. I was able to go down to his shop and try out one of his A5s and I was really into the tone and feel, but I wasn't fully decided. I then went to TME and tried out one of his F5s from 2005 and it blew me away. I played a bunch of other great mandolins, but that one kept pulling me back in. I decided to have a Due commissioned and Joe happened to still have the same slab of red maple from that F5. We then chose to go with a red maple top and tone bars to balance out the low end of the one piece back.
A few days before Christmas, I went to pick it up and I can't keep my hands off it. It's incredibly balance all the way up the neck and plays like butter. It also has a very sweet tone and crazy sustain. In a jam it’s not as bright as some bluegrass mandolins, but it’s definitely punchy and gets everyone’s attention. I couldn't be more happy with it!

I have talked with Joseph and he is a very nice guy. I hope some day to call him with money in hand. LOL

With the wide grained spruce top, it's not made to produce that bluegrass brightness. Actually, that wide, wide spruce top reminds me an awful lot of my Altman two point, which sounds about as throaty as it gets. I'm curious if yours has a similar layered timbre. I've always admired the impeccable execution of Joe's violin styling. Makes me wonder if you plan to use it to play old time music. Enjoy it.

What a gorgeous mandolin - congratulations! I'm a huge fan of Joe's work! One day maybe the stars will align and I'll be able to add one to the stable!

Impeccable. Among everything else that's noteworthy, the headstock logo is sublime, and that it's balanced with the tailpiece etching is wonderful. Troppo bello.

I agree-- I only have lower end instruments and for my purposes they're fine. There's something about the Campanellas' styling that just calls out to me. The violin construction details make his mandolins look old, in the best possible way-- like a Strad or Guarneri.

You don't see many, but his A style is on of my favorites. I like the violin style construction and the coloring. Other that an asymmetrical two point it's the A for me. OK if I had to I could play an F style.

That top. I love the look of the grain in that top. The way all the hardware flows together, makes for very classy look. I am sure the pictures don't do it justice. Congratulations on a beautiful mandolin.

Campanella mandolins are seriously about the only thing that gives me MAS right now. Never played one, but have enjoyed the soundclips that I have heard and they are absolutely stunning visually. Enjoy yours!

Is that what he calls the A-440?

An oval-hole "hybrid" for the 21st century, the X-braced A-440 model has the low end and sustain of an old Gibson, with modern volume, playability and response.
Have you played one of those? Most of his mandolins seem to f-holes. I do love the way they look but only tried a couple of his when he was first starting out. I would love to try one or more again. Maybe I need to get up to his shop or to Music Emporium one of these days.

Oh, I see this old thread from 2010 when he first introduced that one.

I hope to play a Due some day. They are one of the most beautiful mandolins I've ever seen. And I understand they sound great also.

Jim, the one I saw was an ff hole, I would love to play any of his but we don't have places around here that really carry much for mandolins. Some day. These days I am thinking more of an oval with the extended neck.

Ok I’m bumping this thread back up. I am such of fan of Joseph’s work. No matter what mandolin you already own I really feel having one of his mandolins in the arsenal is a wise choice. No financial interest whatsoever in face I do t even own one “yet”. I’ve played a bunch throughout the yard and they’ve always been good but his latest or are on fire. His Due point mandolins, I believe, are special.

One year to the very day since my post above. A pre-owned Dué arrived at my door. It's all that I hoped for and expected!

Congrats! They are fantastic mandolins. If I didn't have a left hand that needs a very specific neck shape, I'd have been all over that one. That Due I had was one I shouldn't have let get away. I think I just used J74s or EXP74s on it. These days I'd put Mangans on it--I have them on all my mandos.
