Default Instruments from the estate of Earl Scruggs for sale at Gruhn's

    https://bluegrasstoday.com/instrumen...gruhn-guitars/

Starting tomorrow, January 23, approximately two dozen instruments from the personal collection of Earl Scruggs will be offered for sale at Gruhn Guitars in Nashville. The various items include a number of open back banjos, several guitars, and an eye-popping selection of top drawer, highly ornate banjos given to him by Gibson over the years.

These are all pieces that Earl had kept for his own use, and will be sold with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by both George Gruhn and Gary Scruggs. Some have significant historical value while others were primarily banjos and guitars he kept for his own entertainment. A couple of Mark Leaf travel cases are also included.

All of these instruments will be on display on the second floor of Gruhn’s Nashville showroom, and can be viewed upon request. Interested purchasers outside the Nashville area should contact Joe Spann by email or phone (615-256-2033).

This is a unique opportunity for serious collectors to own a bit of bluegrass and banjo history. These pieces are not expected to linger.

    That was FAST!

Some of the items were actually reasonably priced.

The Baby Taylor guitar as a recent instrument does not have any "Earl"- or "vintage"-value (to me). I think that the older banjos may have a certain added value for being vintage instruments that belonged to a banjo hero. The Gower guitar was priced low enough. The Advanced Jumbo had an added "Earl"-price bonus yet was not priced out of proportion.

The Gibson five string banjos (and the Vega banjos) have a hefty rate for having belonged to Earl Scruggs. But in this case... you may own a type of instrument that your hero made famous...

The only thing that appears to be left is the $20,000.00 Vega. I'm not sure that will bring that price even with the provenance.

I missed that one. Maybe that one might go.

I'm sorry. I can't help myself. Is there a toaster?
I'll go back to work now.

It's nice to know his family got to cash in on all those banjos Gibson sent Earl (but probably never used.)

On a local level around here, a well-known guitarist had an Ibanez endorsement. His mother told me he received about 10 guitars a year from them and he took them straight to the pawn shop and sold them. He just considered them part of his income.

With no disrespect to Bill Monroe, some would say that Earl Scruggs (and his 5-string toaster) made the definitive bluegrass toast.
When 'good enough' is more than adequate.
