This drives me nuts. A Collings MT totally covered in black finish so that one can not actually see the " figured maple" back and sides. And at over 3K.
Seesh, gimme a break.

De gustibus non disputandum est.
Some like 'em that way. You don't. If enough share your views, it won't sell at that price.
I'm betting someone will like it. We'll see.

Well if someone buys it , great. However at over 3K I would expect to see some very nice flamed maple sides and back, not B-stock covered in black lacquer and hyped as "Spinal Tap - Prog Metal".

I looked at that one. De gustibus is the operative phrase ... but it's not for me.

Now if it was a black stain and you could see the figure underneath, I might be more intrigued by it.

Maybe someone at Collings noticed all the blacked out vehicles being sold today and thought there was a market for it. Or more likely wasn't planned
It's ok. I don't prefer it but I like it better than the aqua blue F5 Gibson
I've played this one. Huge voice. Probably one of the best sounding MT's I've played. To me, the color doesn't matter. It's the sound and the feel.
I've played some pretty fancy looking mandolins that were just meh. It works both ways. It just depends what your priorities are.
I like it. Seems a little pricey, but someone will buy it.

Well there is no doubt about Collings build quality. If it sounds great then the proof is in the pudding. If it makes someone happy then that is all that matters. I'll stop being such a curmudgeon.

I once played a Heiden Blacktop F5 mandolin that was off the charts good. Color of the instrument didn't matter a bit!
Blacktop and all black rattle can are two different things. I do not see the appeal. Maybe someone will.
