Found a cool video of Chris Thile playing a 1900 Orville Oval Hole A mandolin. Seemed like something the vintage forum might appreciate!

At about :35 he says, 'Amazing shape' . . . that thing looks awfully nice for being 118 years old!

That mandolin currently resides at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.

The best place to see some Orville’s up close would be The National Music Museum. That is if you ever get to South Dakota. They have 4 of the roughly 20 known Orville pieces. Or you could go to Carter Vintage in Nashville where they have 2 available for sale that if you ask nicely you might be able to get hands on with them.

I wonder if it was purchased from Carter's by Jonathan Kellerman who aside from being a best-selling author (as well as his wife) has an incredible collection of fretted instruments including a full quartet of Loar-signed instruments. His book from a few years ago, With Strings Attached: The Art and Beauty of Vintage Guitars, shas some beautiful photos of some amazing fretted instruments. I guess he donated that mandolin to the Met more recently.

Thanks, Phil.
