Thread: Hutchins Aluminum mandolin

    Default Hutchins Aluminum mandolin

    Hi, everyone.

In case you all haven't seen it already, this popped up on ebay USA:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/1895-Hutchi...19.m1438.l2649

The seller seems to know his stuff (maybe it's one of us?), and he's right that this is a rare, even historically significant, example of this optimistic side-track of the mandolin mainline. Unfortunately I can't afford to be a collector in this fashion, even though I live 20 miles from Springfield, MA where this was made so long ago, but I thought someone here might want to give it a good home. I've cross-posted in the "Bowlbacks of Note" thread.

Best to all, and keep playing. -Chris.

Now we have two Hutchins threads about the same mandolin plus another in the Bowlback of Note thread in Classical. Can we cobine these threads?

Good idea, Jim, though I don't know how to do it. I just wanted as many people as possible to see it, and my impression is that this thread has a pretty restricted audience. I've also contacted the Springfield Museums just to let them know it's out there. They do have a section devoted to local manufacturing history, so I thought they should know, but have no contacts there and no idea if they'll be interested.

Would love to hear it, but would hate to play it on a cold night.

You could cool it off with a quart of quality beer -- sort of a keg-o-lin.

Put a few chunks of dry ice in there, it'll cool you down and look like you're playing some really hot licks due to the co2 vapor coming out.

This thread is over 5 years old. I did post photos from the eBay auction at this link: https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/t...=1#post1625127

Here is a late 1800s Merrill that I've played.

I believe the Hutchins is very similar.

I think the main difference is that Hutchins are all aluminum including the top and the Merrill’s have a wooden top joined to the aluminum bowl.
